About Ayurvedic Nutrition

Ayurveda or Knowledge of Life is an ancient science that is based upon the healing abilities of food. Food has an important part in both our physiological and mental well-being. Ayurvedic nutrition is about treating “Food as a medicine,”.

“Aharshudhou satva shudhihi,” according to Vedantic philosophy, If we eat a healthy diet, our minds will be healthy as well. Ayurvedic nutrition believes in the proper preparation of food, the proper combination of foods, the proper volume of food, the proper frequency of meals, and the proper times and places for eating. It works on the concept of AGNI or digestive fire, if we are not able to digest well what we eat; the food will be accumulated in our body as AMA or toxins. Hence as per Ayurveda – “we are what we eat digest!!

The concept of Ayurvedic Science is based upon AGNI & AMA.

In Ayurveda Agni or Digestive Fire, is the element of fire and leads to transformation. The primary functions of AGNI are digestion, absorption, assimilation, and the transformation of food into energy.

Ama or Toxins clogs the digestive tracts, visceral organs, and even arteries. This build up of Ama depletes Agni, and a depleted Agni cannot properly digest, assimilate, or absorb food. Thus creating more Ama & eventually leads to gained weight, food allergies, and low energy levels.

We all are made up of different combinations of 5 elements or Panchmahabhutas –Vayu(Air), Aapa(Water), Aakash(Ether), Agni(Fire) and Prithvi(Earth), which are combined to form three Doshas or Bio-energies. These are Vata, Pitta & Kapha that govern creation, maintenance and destruction of bodily tissues as well as the assimilation and elimination. Each person is born with a unique blend of these doshas that determines their Prakriti, or basic constitution. Understanding each person’s Prakriti to determine their specific diet and activity routine, supplements and medicinal herbs, and cleansing and rebuilding therapies that are suited for them are just a few of the key strategies that Ayurveda uses to maintain and restore health.

Ayurvedic Body Types

Vata Dosha or Energy of movement is derived from air and space elements. The Vata dosha is primarily responsible for bodily motions and nervous system activity. People with the vata dosha are continually on the go, have a creative mind, and are full of vigor and vitality. In case of Imbalance, they can experience physical/bodily issues like constipation, hypertension, weakness, arthritis, restlessness and other stomach or digestion related problems.

Since Vata represents – cool, dry, light, and rough qualities, food that is cooked, warm, hydrating, full of healthy fats has to be consumed by Vata people to maintain the balance.

The Pitta Dosha or Energy of Digestion & Metabolism is derived from fire and water elements. When balanced, Pitta People are self-confident, goal-oriented, efficient, focused, with good problem-solving skills and a sharp wit. When in imbalance it can lead to heartburn, ulcers, insomnia, vision problems, anger, stubbornness, aggressiveness, sarcasm, absolutism and being judgmental.

Since Pitta represents hot, oily, light, and sharp qualities, food that is cool, refreshing, containing healthy fats & mild are ideal.

Kapha governs the structure of the body. The Kapha dosha or Energy of Lubrication is derived from earth and water elements. It is the principal that holds the cells together which forms the muscle, fat and bones in the body. Kapha people are usually warm, loving and thoughtful people. But when their kapha goes out of balance, they can become quite stubborn, unreasonable & fearful.

Since Kapha represents heavy, cool, oily, and smooth qualities foods suitable to them are light, warm, baked, grilled, sautéed & air fried.

KNOW YOUR PRAKRITI (DOSHA TYPE)

Body Type Analysis or Prakriti Analysis is done on the basis of few questions that may pertain to Physical, Mental & Emotional attributes of a person. A person may be a Vata dominant, Pitta dominant or Kapha dominant or may have two dominant doshas. Some people have an equal proportion of all three doshas and they are known as Tridoshic personalities.
