Carbs cause obesity & hence we should not eat them; this is the myth!!! Rather we should not eat them in excess & there are few types of carbs that are more harmful to our body. When we eat carbs, they are broken down into simple sugars, which are absorbed into the bloodstream. With increase in the sugar levels in the body, the pancreas start releasing a hormone called ‘insulin’ which is a signalling hormone that carries the sugar into cells to be absorbed & used by cells as a source of energy. But there is a limit as to how much sugar can be absorbed by cells & the unabsorbed sugar left in the blood stream is harmful & is the reason for various diseases – including diabetes

Types of Carbohydrates: Simple Carbs, Complex Carbs, and Fiber

  1. Simple Carbohydrates or Sugars

Simple carbohydrates or sugar may be natural or refined. Though both types of sugar shall be avoided but it is still better to have natural sugar, if at all it is desirable. Sugars pass into the blood quickly, causing blood sugar levels to spike.

2.Complex Carbohydrates or Starches

Starches are made of joined sugar molecules, so they take time to get digested & hence don’t raise blood sugar as quickly as simple carbs do, but the refined starches are equally harmful. While consuming complex carbs, it’s best to avoid or limit grains that have been refined and processed foods made from refined grains (endosperm)

People with diabetes should limit their intake of Refined Starches & Sugars. They should keep monitoring the total carb intake per meal and during the day. This will help them to keep their glucose (blood sugar) levels remain within the target range.
