Red Lentils are a rich source of IRON & also good for LIVER Cleansing. This soup is tridoshic recipe, but should be given in moderation to VATA because of the the light and dry quality of red lentils.
INGREDIENTS
- Pink Masoor Daal or Red lentils – 1/2 cup
- Water – 2.5 cups
- Cow Ghee – 1 tsp.
- Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp.
- Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp.
- Asafetida/Hing – 1 pinch
- Garlic Clove (chopped) – 1 large clove
- Fresh or dried curry leaves – 2-3
- Coriander leaves, chopped -1 small handful
- Turmeric – 1/4 tsp.
- Garam Masala powder – 1/2 tsp or according to taste
- Salt – 1/4 tsp or according to taste
METHOD:
- Wash and soak the lentils overnight & drain.
- For Cooking – Add the soaked lentils and 1.5 cups water to a pot/vessel and bring to a boil. Keep Cooking on medium heat, uncovered, for 20- 30 minutes. Add 1 more cup of the water and continue to cook for another 15-20 minutes or until beans are tender. Set aside.
- Alternatively – Pressure cook with 2.5 cups water for 3 – 4 whistles
- In a separate pan – heat the ghee add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds and hing.
- Also add garlic and roast it. Add the curry leaves, cilantro, turmeric and masala powder.
- Add this mixture into the lentil soup, then add the salt. (add water to get the desirable consistency & boil for 2-3 minutes)
Doshic Tip:
- Vata People – Add 1/2 tsp extra ghee & have this not more than twice in a week.
- Kapha & Pitta People: Can consume as per the recipe given.
