  • The fiber from plant-based food is fermented by beneficial bacteria & promotes its growth. In this process, acids are released in the intestine & the acidic environment hinders the growth of harmful bacteria. This increases the populations of beneficial bacteria in the gut & curtails the harmful ones, improving the overall gut health.

On the other hand, the processed foods &high in sugar foods have low fiber content hence they promote the growth of harmful microorganisms in the gut since the pathogens feed on sugary food. And the sustained unhealthy eating habits that involve eating processed foods can increase gut permeability or & allowing harmful gut bacteria and toxic compounds to enter the bloodstream. This makes the gut cause inflammation leading to lifestyle diseases like diabetes & obesity when sustained in long run.

What is a Gut barrier?

The gut wall is lined by layers of protective epithelial cells that act as barriers to control the passage of water, cells, molecules, and pathogens across epithelial layers. It is also known as the ‘intestinal barrier’& it is constantly challenged by foreign substances that pass through the intestine, such as food and drink, drugs, microorganisms, pathogens, and toxins. So it’s obvious that the type of food that we eat will lead to strengthening or disruption of this layer. When we consume a diet high in fiber, the beneficial bacteria ferment fiber& in this process, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are produced. These fatty acids provide energy to the gut cells, & streng then it.

  • Eating a balanced plant-based diet rich in different kinds of vegetables increases the diversity of good bacteria as the variety in food will feed a variety of microorganisms as well while diets consisting of refined sugars and saturated fat lower microorganisms diversity & is associated with not only obesity and diabetes but also anxiety, depression, etc.
  • In the process of SCFAs formation(as discussed above), even the dangerous cancer cells have been killed. The unwanted metallic toxins that may enter our body can be excreted from the body as fiber can bind to certain heavy metals.

Taking care of the gut is as important as taking care of the Heart & other vital organs. After all, it’s where the food enters the body, helps absorb nutrients, boosts the immune system, and prevents diseases.
